How performance training works

FPG believes that training the mind is like training any other muscle. Our performance psychology team helps athletes and performers develop the mental skills needed to prepare effectively, respond to pressure and perform more consistently. Recognizing the mental side of performance is only the beginning; we provide the psychological “how-to” for optimal performance when it matters most, rather than leaving the mental game to chance.

Mental skills training gives athletes specific tools to learn, practice and master. These skills can help athletes who are facing performance anxiety, inconsistent performance, burnout, difficulty recovering from mistakes or injury, and other roadblocks. They can also help athletes who are performing well and want to gain a competitive edge.

As former athletes themselves, our team understands competition, training, teamwork and pressure. Their experience with athletes ranging from beginners to Olympic and professional levels allows them to work with people across ages, sports and levels of competition.

Individual training

Every athlete has unique needs. FPG creates an individualized mental-skills training program around the athlete’s sport, goals and circumstances. Sessions connect mental skills to the situations that matter during training, competition and performance.

Areas of training may include confidence, focus, preparation, performing to potential, motivation, consistency, performance anxiety, burnout, returning after injury, recovering from mistakes and setbacks, overcoming mental roadblocks, and strengthening coach–athlete communication.

ENHANCE: Athletes choose FPG when they want to take their game to the next level. We provide practical tools for taking greater control of the mental game. Whether an athlete is moving from JV to varsity, from college to the professional level, or simply working toward a personal best, mental skills can strengthen performance.

RESTORE: Athletes can feel off their game, struggle to find the “zone,” or face challenges involving injury, pressure, performance anxiety or a slump. We help identify roadblocks to optimal performance and develop specific skills for overcoming barriers and returning to desired performance levels.

MAINTAIN: Consistency is central to both success and long careers. We help athletes identify the habits and conditions that support peak performance and make it easier to recreate them over time.

Individual sessions are typically 45 minutes and focus on skills that athletes can practice and use independently.

Team training

Team training is designed to strengthen cohesion, leadership, communication and shared performance habits. Sessions are typically one hour, interactive and connected to the team’s athletic setting. Coaches’ and athletes’ perspectives help shape the plan and identify specific areas for growth.

Corporate advising

Whether on the court or in the boardroom, teamwork is vital. Corporate sessions use many of the same performance principles to build communication, efficiency, productivity, leadership and cohesion. Ask us about using the DISC assessment with your organization.
